Earth Vision

Lucie and Simon

Visions of cities, suburbs, of a world to come. Hybrid territories. "No place." Places non-existent by day. At night, for a wandering lens searching the complicituous artificial lights of the night, they reveal another appearance. The mysterious one. The alarming one ? Perhaps simply the Unknown. Time remains suspended as if unnerved by a particular absence, by the abandonment of order, city life given up for dead having lost its sense of day and night. The neon lights of night-time, painting in a multitude of colours on the photographic canvas, invite Man to see. To see himself. As men or women see themselves at the moment the lens discovers them surprised, caught ; showing the scars of the places they've lived in, or barely tolerated ; places that have welcomed them or chased them away. Figures suspended like an unanswered question, stiffened by awareness of their own presence in a scene made, if not of their own hand, by their own consent. The eye looks for the man and finds him standing. Puzzled at finding himself there. Or lying down. Not asleep but coldly offered, overwhelmed, crushed. Falsely folded into the background, he might have remained hidden. But fixing the eyes on this indispensable anchor reassures us and organizes space through light and dark. Unless, on the contrary, we wish to cast off this human anchor, to deny it despite the abundance of impersonal details and to fall back into our troubling first impression. Loss. Disorder. Where am I, since I can no longer see beyond what I know?
